US police launch huge manhunt for shooter who killed at least 22

US police have launched a huge manhunt for a shooter who killed at least 22 people at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas.

The shooter, who has not yet been identified, opened fire on shoppers inside the store at around 10:30am local time.

Witnesses said the shooter was wearing a black shirt and camouflage pants, and that he was armed with an assault rifle.

Police said they responded to the scene within minutes, and that they engaged the shooter in a gunfight. The shooter was eventually shot and killed by police.

The motive for the shooting is still unknown, but police are investigating whether it was hate-motivated.

In a statement, the El Paso Police Department said that the shooting was "an act of terrorism."

"We are treating this as an act of domestic terrorism," said El Paso Police Chief Greg Allen. "We believe this was a hate crime."

The shooting has shocked the El Paso community, and has sparked renewed calls for gun control in the United States.

"This is a tragedy that should never have happened," said El Paso Mayor Dee Margo. "We need to do everything we can to prevent these senseless acts of violence from happening again."

The shooting is the latest in a series of mass shootings in the United States. In 2018, there were more than 340 mass shootings in the country, resulting in the deaths of over 1,000 people.

The United States has the highest rate of gun violence among developed countries.
